ENZYME DEFICIENCY
Enzymes are the driving force behind almost all processes that happen in your body. Without enzymes, life would not exist. They are workers that allow your body to function. You have hundreds of thousands of enzymes in each organ with specific functions. Enzymes control muscle function, make our hearts beat, stimulate nerves, keep us breathing and even help our minds function. These very important and complex biochemical substances also produce strong, healthy bodies by converting nutrients from our food. There are three different types of enzymes. First, metabolic enzymes which control the function of our bodies. Second, food enzymes which are contained in all RAW foods. And last but definitely not least are digestive enzymes which are secreted by the body to digest the foods we consume.
Enzymes in plants for example bring the plant to its ripeness and in the proper conditions they will digest the plant when activated. When we consume a raw vegetable or fruit the enzymes are released by chewing or cutting them. The proper conditions for enzymes to be activated are water, proper pH range, temperature and a product to digest. Nature has provided us with enzymes in food to help us digest what we consume. These enzymes are only found in raw foods, in the right amount and the right type. This is provided to us so that our bodies would not have to do all of the work, which is a major stress on the body.
There are many different enzymes to digest the many different macronutrients needed for growth and repair. Protease breaks down protein, lipase breaks down fats, and amylase breaks down carbohydrates. There are three different amylases, lactase for lactose which is a milk sugar, sucrase breaks down refined sugars and maltose breaks down malt sugars.
You may be thinking to yourself, ‘I eat healthy, why would I need enzymes?’ Well, if you eat food that is altered in any way such as steaming, boiling, roasting, broiling, frying, canned, pasteurized, stewed or microwaved, you need food enzymes. Since enzymes are very sensitive to these processes, they are lost which also allows for longer shelf-life. When the enzymes are missing your body is forced to produce the missing enzymes for the breakdown of each macronutrient listed previously. When your body is forced to give up enzymes this puts undue stress on organs and steals enzymes from your immune system to digest your food.
Avoiding enzyme deficiency is not an easy task. We are fast-paced individuals who are in need of quick and convenient foods. To provide consumers with on the go foods, enzymes must be removed. Digesting foods requires large amounts of energy, when a food lacks enzymes this energy need increases. This high energy requirement is often the answer to why we are tired after meals. Eating many raw vegetables and fruits with each meal will help decrease the burden on the body since raw foods contain enzymes. Otherwise, taking a plant based enzyme supplement with each meal will decrease the workload on your digestive system by breaking your food down which in turn reduces stress placed on digestive organs and the immune system.
Eighty billion dollars is spent each year on medications to relieve symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn and bloating. Poor digestion and enzyme deficiency can lead to other problems such as fatigue, headaches, diarrhea and or constipation, colon problems and even high cholesterol just to name a few. If poor digestion continues, this allows for chronic degenerative diseases to become evident in the later years of life. If anyone you know, including yourself have similar symptoms, you may be enzyme deficient! Call our office today for an exam that can indicate how well your body digests and utilizes food. Because no two people are alike, there are different enzyme formulations available to target your specific needs. Along with recommended enzymes some dietary modifications may be needed. This program has helped thousands return to a state of health, come see what we can do for you.
